Lesson: Scary Skull Drawing
In this lesson, we're gonna bring a scary skull illustration right off the page. You'll learn step-by-step how each part of the skull comes together, from the cranium down through razor-sharp teeth. We’ll focus on outlining, detailing, and using colors like red for those haunting irises and gray for depth. Plus, we'll create a dramatic black background that makes your artwork really stand out. Let’s get started and turn that blank space at the top of your paper into something spine-chilling!
Outline the Cranium
First, draw a large curved line to form the skull’s cranium.
Add the Cheekbones
Add the protruding shape of the skull’s cheekbones.
Draw the Upper Jaw
Form the skull’s upper jaw connected to the cheekbones.
Outline the Eye Sockets
Outline the large eye sockets of the scary skull.
Add the Nasal Cavity
Add the shape of the nasal cavity.
Attach the Lower Jaw
Attach the lower jaw below the cheekbones.
Outline the Mouth
Outline the mouth by drawing a line following the shape of the lower jaw.
Add the Ridges
Add the ridges around the mouth by creating short vertical lines.
Attach the Teeth
Let's make our drawing of this skull extra scary by drawing some razor sharp teeth.
Draw the Eyeballs
Draw rounded eyeballs inside the eye sockets to give the skull a menacing look.
Form the Texture of the Skull
Form the rough texture of the skull by creating short curved lines as shown.
Color the Eyeballs
Fill in the irises with red, and the pupils with black. Then, color the outer part of the eyeball with white.
Fill in the Hollow Part of the Skull
Fill in the eye sockets, nasal cavity and the mouth with black.
Shade the Skull
Shade the skull with white and the teeth with yellow. Create shadows using light shades of gray.
Fill in the Background
Let’s make the skull pop out and look scarier by filling in the background with black.
